Elements That Make an Outfit Interesting

Are you stuck in a rut and can’t see beyond your yoga pants, white tank top, and zipped hoodie (or the equivalent)?  Does nothing feel inspiring or special? This doesn’t mean that you have to wear the latest trends or some crazy color combinations.
Here are 4 elements you can explore to add some personality to your outfits.  While there are countless ways to do that, I found these 4 tips to be easy and pretty helpful for my clients.

1. COLORS
Color is essential to any outfit. Neutrals can be enhanced by adding a pop of color to a scarf, hair tie, jewelry, or shoe. If you love to wear bright, muted, or light colors, you can move to the other elements.
Try that: Wear your best colors near your face.

2. TEXTURE
When you pair smooth with smooth with smooth, there is nothing to catch the eye (and this is especially true when it’s all in neutral colors).
When you add texture to your look it creates dimension. You can do this with embroidery, eyelet, lace, leather, suede, and tweed. Shoes and belts are also great for adding texture.

3.  PATTERNS
Patterns come in different styles, colors, and sizes.
While I often discourage my clients from wearing a print head to toe (it can be too overwhelming!), even a small amount of a print or pattern, can add some interest to your outfit. If you prefer solid clothing, incorporate patterns via shoes, scarves, and handbags.

4. ACCESSORIES
This is the place where many women get overwhelmed.  How do you know what works?  What texture, size, color, and how many pieces do you wear at once? One client (and she’s certainly not alone) recently said to me that she had no idea how much she needed jewelry to complete her outfits. Bets, jewelry, and scarves are such fun ways to add personal expression to your wardrobe.
Try that: The next time you go shopping wear one of your go-to outfits you want to accessorize and play.  See what you like.  Experiment with what looks good and take off what you don’t like.

Start slow.  If this is new, pick one concept at a time and add it to your basic wardrobe.  And if you’re unsure where to start, I’m here to help.
